Metatarsal stress fractures refer to overuse injuries that occur at the bones of the toes. When too much pressure is applied on those bones during physical activity and not enough recovery time is allowed, bruising occurs. This can eventually become small cracks in the bones’ surface. Common physical activities during which metatarsal stress fractures occur include sports-playing and repetitive activities at a job site.

The most common symptoms of a stress fracture include:

  • Pain that starts and gets worse during physical activity.
  • Pain that doesn’t get better after stopping activity.
  • Pain that’s more noticeable when you’re resting.
  • Tenderness to even a light touch on or near your affected bone.
  • Swelling.

How are stress fractures treated?

Your health practitioner will suggest treatments based on the location of the fracture and the severity of your symptoms. Physiotherapists and kinesiologists work together at our clinic to guide you on your path to recovery.

Keep an eye on this page for our next post that will include more detail on these fractures. Online posts, however, do not replace the expert advice of a health care practitioner. If you are experiencing the above symptoms, call us for an assessment. We can help!
